Basic course in Linux

    Presents basic concepts and intermediate Linux operating system, as a prerequisite for courses in programming in Fortran and Scientific Visualization. Hours: 30 h

     Target Audience:

  Undergraduate and postgraduate any Brazilian universities who are interested in modeling environmental systems and are unable to perform this learning in their institutions, teachers and researchers who want to learn environmental modeling.

     Objectives:

     At the end of the course, the participant should be able to understand about the history of Linux distributions differentiate some of that operating system and understand important concepts in computing; perform basic tasks using several commands in virtual terminal, use the text editor ( vi and vim); compactors use and have basic knowledge about how to customize the system and program in Shell Script; understand the commands and know how to use them according to the different daily situations.

     Content:

     Module 1: Introduction to Linux, its different versions and basic concepts such as the use of virtual terminal, jokers, manipulating files and directories. Also discussed are the commands to run programs. Attachments are included even with the installation of Linux (Debian version), the installation of software Putty and WinSCP.

    Module 2: Presentation of the many useful commands, as well as explanations of the access permissions to files and directories.

   Module 3: Exhibition of more advanced features, such as for handling accounts, redirectors and pipe, basic network commands, use of compactors, system customization and programming concepts in Shell Script. Also discussed are the Vim text editor and how to get help in Linux.

     Methodology:

   It will be offered in character short course in distance mode, with a total workload of 30 hours and with classes starting every 60 days. All course materials will be made available in a virtual learning environment of UFV, the PVANet. Consist of teaching materials: printing text, audio lessons, exercises and list of recommended reading collection with. Students will be accompanied by tutors throughout the course to answer questions via e-mail system and other communication tools. For this course, interaction is provided online, on Thursdays, between tutor and student to clarify doubts and questions.

     Certification:

     As the course program is divided into three modules, the passage to the next module is only allowed when the student has passed the earlier. The approval will occur with 70% accuracy in the evaluation questions. If the student is not approved, you will be entitled to a second chance. Once approved the module, it passes to the next, in which the procedure is repeated.

     The issuance of the certificate of completion will be given only after the final approval in module III and the response to the questionnaire course evaluation. The shutdown will occur in the case of two failures in any of the modules or if the student exceeds a month (30 days) enrolled in the same module. The maximum travel time is 60 days.
