Course on Scientific Visualization by Means of Language NCL

Advanced course to use the key features of NCL (NCAR Command Language) scripts in for mapping, graphics and data processing in 4 dimensions (x, y, z, t). Ideal for processing image files in netcdf format (the standard used by the IPCC) or hdf (standard used by NASA). Extremely efficient processing of results of environmental models, satellite images and GIS in general. Requires knowledge of Linux and programming. Hours: 60 h

     Objectives:

At the end of the course, students will be able to: install the required library for the use of NCL on a computer operating system Linux, understand and use key features in scripts to produce maps, charts and data processing; understand, create , modify and manipulate netCDF files; using data visualization software.

     Target Audience:

Undergraduate and postgraduate any Brazilian universities who are interested in modeling environmental systems and are unable to perform this learning in their institutions, teachers and researchers who want to learn environmental modeling. Participants should dominate the Linux operating system.

     Content:

Module 1: Introduction to NCL and applications for data visualization. Presentation of the main features and structure of a script in NCL to produce maps and graphics including XY: Libraries, Functions Input / Output data, plot creation, Zoom, titles, colors and levels, Subtitles, Fountain, tweens, and Vectors Lines Currents.

Module 2: How to create a script that processes data including: Libraries, Functions Input / Output, Subscripts and dimensions, symbols, expressions and Loops. Presentation of various resources used for data manipulation.

Module 3: Presentation of more advanced features for creating dashboards with various maps, change resolution, use of masks, creation and concatenation of netCDF files and some statistical resources.

     Methodology:

Will be offered in character short course in the distance mode, with total workload of 60 hours and classes starting every 90 days throughout the courseware will be available in the virtual learning environment of UFV, the PVANet. Consist of teaching materials: printing text, audio lessons, exercises and recommended reading collection with; students will be accompanied by tutors throughout the course to answer questions via e-mail system and other communication tools.

     Certification:

As the course program is divided into three modules, the passage to the next module is allowed only when the student has passed the earlier. Final approval will occur with 70% in the sum of scores of jobs and evaluation if the student is not approved, you will be entitled to a second chance. Once approved in the first, it will pass to the second, in which the procedure is repeated, the issuance of the certificate of completion will be given only after the final approval in module III and the response to the questionnaire course evaluation; shutdown will occur in the case of two failures in one of the modules or if the student exceeds a month (30 days) enrolled in the same module. The maximum travel time is 90 days.
